About This Project
At GTA Railings, we recently completed a staircase renovation project in Etobicoke, transforming a dated interior into a clean, modern space with frameless glass railings — all custom-designed and installed by our crew.
The project began with the removal of the existing railings, followed by surface preparation of the staircase. This included sanding the treads and landings to remove previous finishes and imperfections, and then applying a new stain to achieve a clean, consistent appearance throughout the stairway.
We then moved forward with templating for the new railing system. Due to variations in the stair geometry, standard solutions were not applicable. Our team performed on-site templating to capture precise measurements and angles, allowing us to fabricate glass panels that would align perfectly with the existing structure.
For the installation of a new glass railing system we used 12mm tempered safety glass and utilized two types of premium mounting hardware:
• Brushed stainless steel standoffs, mechanically anchored into the stair structure and wall faces, used to create the signature floating glass appearance on straight runs and landings.
• 6-inch brushed stainless steel spigots, strategically installed at the base of glass panels to provide structural support where wall anchoring was not applicable or desired.
Together, these components ensured both structural integrity and a modern, seamless look throughout the railing system.
The new railing system consists of 12mm tempered safety glass, mounted using brushed stainless steel standoffs. These standoffs are mechanically anchored into the stair structure and walls, providing a strong and discreet mounting method that enhances the frameless, floating aesthetic of the system.
To complete the installation, we incorporated solid wood wall-mounted handrails for both functionality and code compliance. These were mounted using concealed hardware to preserve the clean architectural lines of the overall design.
Following glass fabrication — which typically requires 2 to 4 weeks — our team returned to site and completed the installation in a single day, minimizing disruption to the homeowner while delivering a precise, high-quality finish.
This project showcases our ability to execute custom railing installations in retrofit conditions where attention to detail, adaptability, and craftsmanship are critical.
